The Alberta Assessors' Association is committed to protecting the personal information of its members and applicants. This policy outlines how the AAA collects, uses, discloses, safeguards, and provides access to personal information, in compliance with Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and the Professional Governance Act.
The AAA values its members and is committed to protecting the personal information of all members. The AAA collects and manages member information to fulfill its professional, regulatory, and administrative responsibilities and to maintain the integrity of the profession.
The organizations regulated by the Act include corporations, unincorporated associations, trade unions, partnerships, and individuals running their own businesses. Special rules apply to non-profit organizations and self-governing professional associations.
The following privacy practices were developed using the “stairway to compliance” to address responsibilities under the Act. “Reasonable” is defined as what a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the circumstances.
· The AAA is responsible for personal information in its custody or control.
· The AAA takes reasonable measures to protect information in accordance with legislation.
· The AAA Executive Administrator/Registrar is responsible for compliance.
· Unless advised otherwise, the Executive Administrator/Registrar will be the contact person.
· Personal information is collected for purposes related to membership management, regulatory functions, education, certification, communication, professional discipline, and stakeholder relations.
The AAA collects, uses, and discloses personal information based on consent, except where otherwise permitted or required by law.
Consent may be express, implied, or provided through opt-out mechanisms, depending on the sensitivity and context. Members may withdraw or vary consent, subject to legal and regulatory obligations.
Information collected is limited to what is necessary for the identified purposes.
Personal information is used and disclosed only for the purposes for which it was collected or as otherwise permitted by law. Information is retained only as long as necessary to fulfill legal, regulatory, and operational requirements.
Where information is transferred across borders (e.g., cloud-based systems), contractual and technical safeguards will be implemented.
The AAA takes reasonable steps to ensure personal information is accurate, complete, and up-to-date as necessary.
The AAA protects personal information with appropriate security measures against unauthorized access, use, or destruction.
The AAA maintains transparency about its privacy policies and practices and makes them available to members and the public.
Members can request access to their own personal information. AAA will consider what is reasonable when granting access and will disclose:
· Purposes for use;
· Names of persons to whom information has been disclosed and circumstances;
· Reasonable fees may apply.
If access to any part of an individual’s information is refused, AAA must provide:
· Reasons for refusal, citing the Act;
· Contact person for questions;
· Notice of the right to request a review by the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
Personal information collected before January 1, 2004 is deemed to have been collected with consent for the original purposes. It is still subject to all other obligations under this policy.

1.0 Membership Fees
All membership purchases with the Alberta Assessors' Association are final and non-refundable. Once payment is processed, membership benefits become active and accessible. Refunds will not be issued for any reason, including changes in employment.

Who can access the Alberta Assessors' Association member portal?
Please note that the Alberta Assessors' Association member portal is to be used by members of Alberta Assessors' Association only. Certain workspaces within the member portal will be tailored for and restricted to certain membership types; access to these areas will be determined and approved by Alberta Assessors' Association staff. The Content that is displayed in your member portal will automatically vary based on your user / membership type.
What can be posted?
To ensure all interactions within the Alberta Assessors' Association member portal are safe and friendly, Alberta Assessors' Association staff will oversee the member portal activity and will review, edit, and delete any inappropriate content that has been submitted. This includes abusive or offensive language, spam, malicious files, or other disrespectful contact.
